The Scrub Technician participates as a team member in planning and implementing nursing care for each patient. They demonstrate the ability to collaborate with medical, nursing, and ancillary services to ensure safe patient care. The Scrub Tech maintains a professional and courteous demeanor, handling confidential information with discretion for the patient and their family.

They are responsible for cleaning instruments and ensuring sterility by following appropriate procedures. They recognize the successful completion of steam autoclave and automated high-level disinfectant processes.

The Scrub Tech selects equipment and supplies in an organized manner based on the surgical procedure. They demonstrate competence in preparing instrument sets according to preference lists, patient history, and age while utilizing supplies cost-effectively. They also operate sophisticated equipment efficiently and adapt to changes in surgical procedures as needed.

They create and maintain a sterile field, adhering to aseptic technique at all times in accordance with AORN Standards. Responsibilities include opening and handling sterile supplies, performing proper surgical hand scrubbing, donning sterile gown and gloves, setting up a sterile field, receiving sterile supplies from the circulator, and assisting in the proper draping of the patient. They promptly initiate corrective measures when a break in sterile technique occurs.

The Scrub Tech collaborates with medical and nursing staff to ensure safe patient care. They handle sharps with care to prevent injury or contamination, follow policies and procedures for surgical counts, and maintain an accurate count of all items on the sterile field. In cases of incorrect counts, they initiate proper protocols. Additionally, they accurately draw up medications and ensure proper labeling of all solutions and syringes. They also serve as a preceptor and mentor to new employees.

They assess the surgical environment for safety, cleanliness, and compliance with regulatory and organizational standards, supporting a state of continual service readiness. They ensure a clean, safe, and orderly work and care environment.

Requirements:

BLS (through AHA or RQI specifically) required
OR Tech certification required
