DETROIT SPORTS COMMISSION SPRING/SUMMER INTERNSHIP

The Detroit Sports Commission (DSC) is currently recruiting interns for spring and summer sessions, with a focus on summer 2024. Interns will contribute to events, sales, and marketing efforts, gaining valuable experience in sports event management, marketing, communications, and sales. They will assist in researching new events for Metro Detroit and crafting bids, learning the processes necessary to secure both amateur and national sporting events for the region. As a non-profit subsidiary of Visit Detroit, the DSC hosts various amateur sporting events in Metro Detroit and collaborates with prominent organizations such as the NCAA, AAU, USSSA, MHSAA, and USA Olympic sports.

Dates: May-August 2024

Location: Detroit, MI

Hours: Students will be expected to work 15-20 hour workweeks from May to August. Before or during events, hours may exceed 40 hours in one week and could involve some

nights and weekends, and Labor Day weekend. A work schedule will be developed at the beginning of the internship.

May 4-5: 2024 Can-Am Classic (Volleyball)

May 12-18: 2024 Golden Gloves National Tournament (Boxing)

June 3-4: Annual Flagstar Bank Detroit Sports Commission Golf Classic

July 5-7: 2024 USA BMX Stars and Stripes (BMX)

July 8-20: 2024 Junior Gold Championship (Bowling)

July 26: Tackle Warehouse Invitational (Fishing)

Aug. 29-30: 2024 Prep Kickoff Classic (Football)

Description of Duties:

Intern responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Educating and building awareness of various sporting events
  • Event Management that includes:
    • Customer Service, Hospitality Management, Security/Access Control, Signage/Décor, Facilitating/Ordering Awards, Facility Management, and PR and Marketing
  • Social Media and Website Content Management
  • Designing marketing and promotional materials and programs
  • Sales Support (Bid & Proposal Creation)
  • Volunteer Management
  • Educating and building awareness of the Xenith Prep Kickoff Classic to ensure maximum coverage and attendance.
  • Aiding Detroit Sports Commission staff in day-to-day operations

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Other Characteristics Required of the Internship

  • Excellent communication skills including the ability to clearly express thoughts, ideas, and concepts, verbally and in writing, in the English language.
  • Skilled in organizing, prioritizing, and analyzing multiple assignments simultaneously.
  • Ability to think and manage creatively in a fast-paced work environment.
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, peers, colleagues, and external stakeholders.
  • Maintains a positive and professional work attitude, appearance, and behavior even in the most demanding situation.
  • Ability to work effectively in both remote and in-person work environment; proficient using video conferencing software and other remote work tools.
  • Ability to perform essential functions that typically involve reading text on a video display monitor and using a keyboard for extended periods of time.
  • Proficient in using personal computer software and applications including Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint.

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements:

  • Extended periods of sitting and standing with occasional extended periods of walking.
  • Prolonged use of desktop/laptop computer and peripheral equipment.
  • Occasional to frequent bending, stooping, standing, and carrying.
  • Occasional lifting of up to 50 lbs.
  • Must be willing to work nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Occasional work outdoors in all weather conditions.

Minimum Qualifications

  • One year of college education.
  • Eligibility to receive college credit, when applicable
  • Demonstrate strong customer service skills, with the ability to troubleshoot and handle challenging situations effectively.
  • Ability to work on evenings and weekends, somewhat regularly, as required.
  • Valid, unrestricted Michigan driver’s license.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Two years of a combination of formal education and work experience.
  • Marketing, sports marketing, or event planning experience/education.
