Salary: $75,000 - 93,000

The Director of Special Education is responsible for designing the extraordinary education repertoire of curricula that meshes with our school’s teaching and learning framework, the Common Core State Standards, and non-categorical student needs.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Leads the school’s effort to design, develop, implement, monitor, and evaluate the model for inclusive practices, co-teaching, and specialized supports in learning labs.
  • Leads the school’s trainings, resources, and processes for teachers and administrators on the delivery of instructional activities to increase opportunities for special education students in general settings.
  • Consult and collaborate with the Content and Curriculum team.
  • Assigns directs and evaluates the work of direct reports (all special education teachers) and guides and supports the professional development and training of staff.
  • Develops department strategy across multiple programs and clear, specific, and ambitious performance measures for related to priorities; and coordinates and directs the work of staff based on volume, priorities, and strategic context.
  • Tracks the progress of multiple programs within a larger strategic context and intervenes where necessary to resolve complex obstacles to success; and interprets the impact of changes in policy and regulation on department strategy.
  • Assesses department’s programmatic talent needs and implements hiring, training/professional development strategies, and organizational design appropriately; guides and coaches direct reports and other team members; and keeps department staff informed of internal and external developments affecting their areas of responsibility.
  • Identifies and systematizes successful operational and project management methods across the department. Develops and implements the annual department budget and allocation of staff and resources.
  • Drives the gathering and analysis of data for internal and external reporting and evaluates, on a quantitative and qualitative basis, the effectiveness of programs and special projects toward meeting established goals and objectives.
  • Stays closely aware of projects, high-level initiatives, and emerging issues across the school and proactively helps adjust department approach based on direction, priorities, and resource changes.
  • Keeps informed about innovations, developments in policy, and research; and advises DCPS senior management team on proposed legislation, policies, and procedures affecting the specific department and projects assigned.
  • Guides the Child Find process, ensuring that IEPs and other documentation are accurate. Coordinates with outside agencies, including service providers, OSSE, school attorney

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree and five to seven years of work experience in Special Education.
  • Master's degree in Education Administration preferred.
  • Previous exposure to or experience in the education sector a plus.
  • Expertise in designing and delivering specialized instruction across the span of IDEA-Identified disabilities.
  • Experience working directly with school staff to develop and implement school-based plans for providing the continuum of placements required under IDEA.
  • Experience authoring pedagogical and other documents necessary to support a district-wide effort to clearly define specialized instruction, appropriately deploy curricula to that end, and maximize the time students with disabilities spend achieving alongside their nondisabled peers.
  • Experience in statistical analysis, policy implementation, and program evaluation.
  • Experience working in schools and knowledge about the specific challenges of implementing specialized instruction in schools.
  • Track record of project management, performance management, and strategic planning/design.
