Summary Position Highlights: The CHAPLAIN provides spiritual care, religious practices, and grief support to, and in partnership with, patients, families, visitors, and staff regardless of faith tradition or lack thereof. These responsibilities include spiritual assessments and counseling, religious rites and rituals, grief and bereavement work, and crisis intervention. The CHAPLAIN facilitates continuity of spiritual care through timely communication, advocacy, and initiating referrals to faith group leaders in the local community as needed; collaborates with the multidisciplinary team to optimize patient outcomes. The CHAPLAIN acts as a resource/specialist for spiritual and religious care surrounding illness, ethics, and end-of-life; and presents on these topics to patients, families, and volunteer groups within the hospital. The CHAPLAIN is knowledgeable on world religions, humanism, and palliative care practices relative to healthcare and end of- life; and represents and supports the mission, philosophy, and goals of the Cancer Center. The CHAPLAIN may at times provide on-call coverage afterhours, on holidays and weekends, or as scheduled or needed. Responsibilities: Provide Spiritual Assessment and counseling to patients, families and staff. Support patients' rights by considering psychosocial, spiritual and cultural variables influencing perceptions of illness. Triage requests for the priest and contact the priest in emergency situations; make referrals to the priest for non-emergencies. Provide grief de-briefing and similar de-briefing for individuals and/or groups as appropriate; collaborate with Human Resources to provide support for staff in tragic situations involving staff and/or patients. Enter daily statistics into Pastoral Care Activity Accounting System(PCARS) and participate in Quality Improvement(QI) activities in the Department of Chaplaincy Care. Assist patients, family members and staff with Advance Care Planning and communicate patients' wishes to the interdisciplinary team. Credentials and Qualifications: Master’s Degree in Theology, Divinity, Religious Studies; or equivalent for faith tradition, i.e., Rabbinical Studies for a Rabbi. Minimum four (4) unit of CPE. A current/active ordination, endorsement, or validation for ministry from a faith group. Minimum of 2 years’ experience as a chaplain in a healthcare setting such as, but not limited to: hospital, hospice, long-term care facility, religious institution, center of worship. Must complete Board-Certified Chaplain (BCC) within 3 years of hire, or upon transfer into FT/PT status, from one of the following professional organizations: Association of Professional Chaplains (APC); National Association for Catholic Chaplains (NACC); or National Association of Jewish Chaplains (NAJC).
