Overview Whitworth University invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor in the Department of Sociology. We are seeking an individual who can teach sociology and criminology courses and is passionate about teaching and mentoring undergraduate students. The position is renewable and is set to begin in the fall of 2026. The typical teaching load is 21 credits across the fall, January, and spring terms. The successful candidate will bring their strengths to our welcoming community and contribute to the Whitworth mission. Department Overview The Whitworth Sociology Department’s mission is to prepare students with the skills to describe, explain, interpret, and make a difference in social life. The department equips students to promote well-being in the social spheres around them and encourages them to explore the relationships between sociology and faith. To these ends, students are expected to master the substantive content of sociology or criminology, including its methods of research and data analysis, to develop an ideal vision of social life informed by sociological and criminological theory, and to be prepared to advance that vision through a career and social engagement. The faculty is committed to providing excellence in teaching, scholarship, and mentoring, modeling community engagement through research, writing, consultation, and service. In addition, sociology faculty members help foster a stimulating and supportive learning community, offering perspectives on social life and social issues from various value frameworks and Christian traditions. We offer two majors: criminology and sociology. Our sociology majors have the option to pursue a concentration in either human services or social analysis. The standard full-time teaching load is usually 21 credits, three courses in the fall, three in the spring, and one in the January term. Key teaching duties include, but are not limited to, introductory sociology, race & ethnicity, core criminology courses, and upper-division electives aligned with the successful candidate's area of specialization. The ability to teach our capstone course (Practicum) is preferred. Responsibilities Participate in department governance and initiatives. Engage in scholarly activities, including research and professional development. Advise and mentor students, fostering academic and career growth. Contribute to university-wide faculty meetings, development activities, and committee service. Qualifications Doctoral degree (Ph.D. or Psy.D.) in sociology, criminology, or aligned fields. For emerging professionals, ABDs completing this academic year will be considered. Teaching experience at the college level. Commitment to teaching and mentoring undergraduate students. A personal commitment to the Christian faith and to the integration of faith and learning. A commitment to the educational mission of Whitworth as a Christian liberal arts university affiliated with the Presbyterian church. The ability to communicate effectively in the language of instruction (English). Salary Information Salary Information Assistant Professor, Sociology Term: 9 months Hiring range: $59,572 to $63,718. Commensurate with years of credited service. 1.75% increase to the minimum salary is granted for each year of credited service at the rank of assistant professor.
